This is so true. I as a single mom who started savings for my twin daughters and my own emergency savings before they were born. I chose to be a single mom and know that if something happens. We need this emergency fund to fall back on since it is just me, and I must be prepared. You would be surprised how fast $30 per month per person in a savings account with no debit card can add up. When my car broke down a few weeks ago I could sleep knowing that I had these saving accounts set aside. Once the mechanic could figure out what was wrong the next day I could pay for the repair with money on hand and did not have to use the savings. These monies are out of site out, and out of mind, but when a true emergency arises from it sure gives mepeace of mind!

In the past, I think my problem has always been #2. Being an assistant – even in Corporate America and living in the Bay Area (where I was born and raised) usually doesn’t leave much to put away after housing and other necessities. I have had many emergencies that have lasted longer than I would have expected them to. Its hard to build when you already spend your emergency fund, and another emergency happens sooner than you can save. I’m in a better place now, but I can and should definitely strive to do better.

I'd never heard of an ER fund before this year either. Fortunately, I learned of it in April, just before the Economic Stimulus Checks arrived. :-) Sometimes it's easier than imaginable to fill up a starter fund.

I combined the idea with something I read in Alan Corey's book, A Million Bucks by 30. He put money in a bank account across town that was hard to get to. I did the same, with 3% interest no less, and it's helped to have that money somewhere else than where I normally bank.

A recent job loss has certainly proved the point that these are essential.

I always keep a balance of 3K in my checking account. i.e. 3K is like a balance of zero for me. Someday it may come in handy on a rainy day.

I am a total believer. Once I put a contingency plan in place that outlined in general terms what I would do if I lost my job, I felt so much more relaxed. I then worked to establish an emergency fund. Having both of these has given me greater piece of mind and a type of freedom that I wouldn't trade.
