By the way, I'll second Chiot's nomination for both Clarks and Keen brand shoes. I've had several pairs of Clarks now and they've consistently been very comfortable for me. I bought my first pair of Keens about 2 months ago and they've been great! Both of these brands are a bit on the pricier side, but they hold up well under daily wear.

Amen to the shoe commentary! And I thought it was just the ladies that made such foot faux pas.

Mr chiots had the same problem, we finally found Clarks dress shoes for him and he loves them!

I find that if I find a brand/style that I like, I can often purchase other ones from the same brand that are equally comfy. I tend to purchase mostly Keen shoes, as they're super comfy from day 1.

Isn't it funny how great a pair of shoes can look & feel in the store, but then after the first couple of wears, you realize just how rotten a choice you've made? You try to be savvy enough not to get burned again, but somehow it occasionally still happens.

My wife very much agrees with your contention that life's too short to wear uncomfortable shoes and she has a solution for this problem - eBay! If she's bought a pair of shoes and after a few wears can't tolerate them, she sells 'em on eBay. You do hafta be forward-thinking enough to retain the box, but that's kinda become second nature for us. She can usually recoup at least 75% of the cost this way, so the lesson is a bit less costly.

By the way, one of the pricier pairs of shoes I've gotten in awhile, but also the most funky, fun, & comfortable are the Vibram Fivefingers that Dede bought for me nearly 3 years ago. These things are like gloves for your feet, providing protection and a little support but still giving you an almost-barefoot feeling - and barefoot is my preferred M.O. anyway!

I hate buying work shoes! Seems no matter how they feel it's never quite the same a month in.

My next pair, I'm going to take my time to buy and check out a bunch of stores and styles of shoes. I always try to get them on the cheap but I probably wear my work shoes more than my running shoes and I researched my running shoes before I bought them! Feeling good isn't only the weekend it's 9-5 too.

Thanks for the reminder!

Hi Jeff,
I love this quote:
"Being happier really is a choice! We have the power to improve our lives if we will simply do something."

You're right everyone has the ability to change their life if they're unhappy with it. It's not always easy and won't necessarily please everyone but it can be done.

Word choice can help highlight this. Try substituting can't with won't, have to with want to and have no choice with I choose. Changing a few key words in what we say takes us from powerless people to whom life happens to empowered people who actively participate in creating the life they want.

I like this post very much and your shoe example is something that we can all relate to.

What an appropriate metaphor Jeff, something we can all relate to. I think people put up with uncomfortable situations hoping the they will somehow self correct. They won’t change until we take action.

Great post Jeff. Really drives home the point of making sure you enjoy what you're doing. Seems like too many times we're too lazy to make the changes we would like to see.

I had a life coach ask me one time, "If you could go back in time and change one thing about your past, what would it be? [pause] Now, the real question is, are you finally going to do something about it today, or are you going to wait a few more years? Do you have the courage to make those changes?"

Funny post! I like it though because I've made the same stupid mistake (I think women are more prone to this screw-up). I don't do it anymore though. I don't own many shoes because there are few that fit my criteria ... moderately priced, cute, comfy. :)
