What we want to do is create a trigger that automatically takes you to those feelings without having to think about it. We want an emotional shortcut to happiness. [...]

Jeff,

Thank you for your reply. I know God doesn't always do what we ask. He certainly isn't the drive up window at Burger King. But my point has always been since He gave me this talent it just doesn't make any sense that He wouldn't also give me something to do with it.

I thank you for mentioning the coaching and the link. I have written Ms Davenport and inquired about a session with her.

As you said, 'What have I got to lose?'

Doug - God certainly doesn't always do what we want, just look at the story of Job in the Bible. We are here to serve him, not the other way around. However, I do believe he has a plan for your life. One that is greater than you can imagine. Of course, it is probably much different than you imagine too. I've been in your shoes brother and it isn't an easy place to be. You are wrestling with some big issues. I'd really suggest talking to a pastor more about this.

Separating from the spiritual questions for a moment, it sounds like you've worked hard trying to get things going with your drawing, but it also sounds like what you've tried so far is simply not working. I'd suggest visiting with a career coach to see how they can help you to discover new opportunities to use your talents in a way that will produce a living. They might be able to help you "see" the answers to some of the questions above.

Check out what Barrie Davenport offers in the way of coaching at Live Bold and Bloom. You could at least just make a phone call and talk to her to see if you think she might be able to help you. What have you got to lose?

Heh, so what happens when the primary mover and shaker of your goals is God? Try moving Him with a question. I know, because I've been doing it for years.

My dream? To work from my home doing that which I love and was obviously born to do - illustration. So I began this journey thirty-five years ago today.

In November of 2008 I was fired from my job and it was just shortly after this that I decided to take advantage of this free time and finally plug away at making a name for myself and my talent online. I created Doug Draws (my business site on WP) and I worked day and night tweaking this site to my satisfaction, including examples of my work, blog articles, tutorials, etc.

I spent countless hours on Google reading every article I could find on how to maximize my presentation, my effectiveness, my web site, my SEO, etc. I joined up with Twitter, LinkedIn, DesignBump, designfloat, The Web Blend, designerID, etc. I visited countless design-related web sites and left comments, interacted with people, wrote guest articles for online magazines, other blogs, etc. I signed up with Google Analytics and Feedburner.

Now we come to today, right now, as I write this comment, and I am still asking God, "Ok, what gives? How come nothing is happening? You gave me this talent, so give me something to do with it. Bless the work of my hands and let me prosper in this endeavor."

As Alicia said to Nash in A Beautiful Mind, "I need to believe, that something extraordinary is possible."

I'm still waiting...

Jarrod - You nailed it. We have to be honest with ourselves and be willing to accept the answers to the questions in order to benefit from them. It takes a lot of courage!

I often limit myself when I say certain things in life that I "Can't do." It's sayings like this that keep me from living an exceptional life. These are three great questions that we should all ask ourselves. If we can be honest with ourselves after answering these question, that's when the exceptional life will begin.

Great post!!

Steve - These really are powerful questions. Ask enough people these questions and you can literally collect enough pertinent information to change your life. Of course, as I mentioned above, you've got to act on the input you receive. If you do, you'll be well on your way to extraordinary.

Jeff, thanks for sharing these success principles. That first question is one of the most powerful, but also takes the most courage. The best thing about it is that there are suggestions for how to ask it in a way that is not offensive. Equally great is the follow up question: how do you see me limiting myself?
