I have been involved in Child sponsorship for over 28 years through World Vision and Missionary Ventures Canada. I have also made about 15 mssion trips to mainly Central American countries, Nicaragua,Guatemala. Freely Give is an idea I had recently to raise money to sponsor children in developing countires by getting commissions from major stores, airlines etc. when people buy through our site. At the moment we sponsor 7 kids and hope to add a new one every two weeks !! Why not give it a look.

Read Martin Foster´s lastest article - Apple announces all New MacBook

@Mark D - Mark welcome to the site! Microlending is a very interesting way to get involved and make a difference. If you are trying to learn more about personal finance, I would highly recommend reading Dave Ramsey's book, "The Total Money Makeover". Following Dave's recommendations could make you very wealthy by the time you are in your early 40s. That probably seems like a long time from now, but trust me, it comes along faster than you might think.

Thanks for your comment! I'm glad to have you as a reader.

I'm a new reader to the site and a few others including The Wisdom Journal as well as Frugal Dad, and am just trying to get my bearings on the financial world. I'm 22 years old, living and working in Germany as an exchange student, and have thoroughly enjoyed the posts on the site.

This one is especially interesting. I'm interested in learning more about such programs, and even though I've got as much money as the common college kid does, I'm having a hard time resisting putting some support behind these programs. I hope to see more, please keep up the great posts.

@FD - I am like you. I wanted to be debt free so that I can purposely give money to good causes. When you create margin in your life you have more freedom to do things like participating in microloans.

@Mrs. Micah - Great point! I like thinking about the impact my $25 can have when it is used over and over throughout the year.

@David - I'm glad to shine a light on good opportunities like Kiva. That is awesome that you have money designated for microlending.

Thanks so much for your comments!

One thing that really excites me about things like Kiva is that you can keep giving the money as it's paid back. That means that adding $25 each year can add up to a 10 loans at a time in 10 years.

This is one of the things driving me towards debt freedom. I want to be more involved with organizations like Kiva and others involved in microfinancing. I think it is a great concept, and one that we could all probably afford to participate in. Think about it...it is hard to get a large pizza delivered for less than $25 with a tip included! That $25 could provide seed money to someone else to start a business of their own, and have enough "fish" to sustain their families. Great post, Jeff...thanks for highlighting such a noble cause.
