You have a very good asset on your side, you are young. You can do whatever you want to do. I am in my mid 40's and I just got my degree in Education. I didn't find out what I wanted to really do, or what I was put on this earth to do until just recently. This is to help our trouble youth. There are so many negative influences in not only our country but also our world. This is something that I want to change. I want to be as positive as I can for today's youth, by the way are our future. I had a rough life growing up, i.e., time in foster homes, time in juvenile center, never felt like I was anything, low confidence in my self, never had no positive mentor in my life, which is very important. All of these reasons are the main motivation to help kids. This along with my own children. I think there is a reason why i went through all of this growing up. I have been a subsitute teacher in the Elementary field for 4 years now and truly love it. I just got a job as a youth counselor. I have recently strengthed my faith in my god.
I am no genus by no standard but, I do know one thing you have time on your side. Use this to your advantage and sit down and think what you really want to do. Have confidence and you will be fine. Try to help someone everyday, say hello to people. Be the best person you can be everyday and everything else will take care of itself. I look forward to hearing how you are doing. Don't settle for nothing but the best. I wish someone would have talked to me like this when I was your age.

@cody - It is awesome to hear that you've learned it is possible to make a huge difference in your life by making the right choices. I am a rather conservative person so, I would suggest completing dental school and then pursuing some of your other dreams. This gives you a safety net, plus you get to finish what you've started.

I like this article, how it talks about living up to our full potential. My position in life is this, I'm 22 and going to dental school. I started reading books on how to become more sucessful with social skills about three years ago. Since then I have evolved and went from being a guy who didnt have a clue to a guy who has exceptional personality traits. People want to hangout with me all the time, girls are ringing my phone off the hook. Despite the fact that it may seem like I'v got it made, inside my head I'm a reck. With all this new success in life I find myself vary confused. I have been asking my self questions like should I be a movie star, should I be a stand-up comedian, should I have my own TV show (I'm not trying to brag or be arrogant these are really the thoughts that my success has generated). If I can figure out how to go from a loser to being who I am now in a matter of three years, what else can I figure out? Staying in dental school is a very safe way to make really good money and I'm totally happy doing it but at the same time my mind cant help telling me on a regular basis (you have more potential than going to dental school). If only I had figured out how to excel in the way I do now a little earlier in life then the decision to take risks would be easier to make, because now I'm at a point where the safe road still nets me a high enough income to do the things I want to. So to sum it all up Im happy with what Im doing and want to just be content with where Im at, but my newly mastered skills keep reminding me that I could be even more successful. What do you think I should do?

Excellent article Jeff,

When we consider all the benefits that come from unleashing our potential it makes the excuses look pathetic. You broke this down in a really nice way. Imagine a world where everyone pushed the excuses aside and just went for it. There is almost limitless ability and talent waiting to be released. I found this post inspiring.

@Stephen - I'm in OKC. Went to school at OSU. I still love visiting Stillwater and eating at Joe's! Glad to have another Okie in the blogosphere.

@ja - I think we get stuck in circles because we start, get scared and pull back from really letting go of our full potential.

Thanks for the comments!
