Regardless of how successful you are, there are some things you could do to hasten moving to the next level. This is the basic premise of What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successfulwhich I just finished reading. It was a great book and I would highly recommend it. Marshall Goldsmith is an executive coach that works with only America’s top business leaders. I think he has some valuable insight that can help us all improve.
Whether you are an entrepeneur, salesperson, manager, CEO, or aspire to such a role, Marshall provides some sound advice. In the book, he suggests that we all have personal behaviors that are limiting our success. He then provides several techniques for identifying your particular quirks along with effective methods to break the bad habits. Marshall packs years of experience as an executive coach into the pages of this book and just like a personal fitness trainer can help you get in shape, the coaching in this book can help you strengthen your success muscles.
If you feel your career progression has come to a standstill or if you are enjoying success but still desire more, then either way this book is for you. I especially liked an approach he recommends called “Feed Forward”. It is an alternative to asking people for feedback which rarely results in anything truly constructive. When was the last time a performance review or feedback from a client provided you with information that you could truly use to improve? If you are ready for some straight talk from an executive coach that will sharpen your edge, then give this a read.
