A positive, healthy attitude is probably the most valuable quality you can possess.
When it comes to being successful, happy and productive in life, I am convinced that there is nothing more important than your attitude.
Not talent. Not experience. Not intelligence. Not social skills. Not money. Nothing.
The Reason Attitude is King
Your attitude is king because it is the basis for your thought life.
Your attitude is your state of mind. It is your mental position from which you interpret and react to the rest of the world around you.
As I emphasized recently in Two Principles That Will Make You or Break You, your thoughts become your actions, and your actions determine your success.
You can be the smartest, most experienced, most talented person in the world, but if you fail to act in the right way, then you will produce nothing useful.
On the other hand, a person with a positive, determined, hard-working attitude can achieve some pretty incredible things.
There is no doubt that attitude is king.
Recognize You Control Your Attitude
It is a bit odd that I actually have to tell you this, but I do. YOU are the one that controls your thoughts and therefore your attitude.
Somehow, we often lose sight of the fact that we are in control of our attitudes.
Here are a few quotes that help drive home the importance of attitude and how we are in charge of choosing our attitude:
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift, or skill. It will make or break a company…a church…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitudes.”
~ Charles Swindoll, pastor, author, educator
Did you catch all that? From experience, Swindoll has learned that attitude is supremely important and the we choose our attitude. That’s powerful.
“There is so much about my fate that I cannot control, but other things do fall under the jurisdiction. I can decide how I spend my time, whom I interact with, whom I share my body and life and money and energy with. I can select what I can read and eat and study. I can choose how I’m going to regard unfortunate circumstances in my life-whether I will see them as curses or opportunities. I can choose my words and the tone of voice in which I speak to others. And most of all, I can choose my thoughts.”
~ Elizabeth Gilbert, author
We can’t control everything that happens to us, but we can choose our thoughts which dictate our attitudes and our reactions.
“We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
~ Viktor E. Frankl, author, holocaust survivor
No matter the circumstances – even in severely extreme situations where you have virtually no control – you can still choose your attitude and that can make all the difference in the world.
Get Control of Your Attitude and Change Your Life
I’ve really been trying to pound this point home lately because I believe that if you can wrap your mind around this fact, you can massively change your life for the better.
Here it is once again – almost all success, achievement, happiness and fulfillment in life is a direct result of your thought-life and attitude. It comes from within. Which is good news because that’s all you control. If you aren’t getting what you want out of life, then you need to change your thinking and attitudes. This isn’t always easy, but it is possible. For some ideas about how to get started, read Elevate Your Thinking to Elevate Your Life.
Honestly, I don’t know how to emphasize this or communicate it any clearer than I have here today. Of course, that doesn’t mean that I won’t keep trying!
