That’s great because today I’m putting you on the fast track to become the CHO of your life.

Raise your right hand and repeat after me.

I solemnly promise to fulfill the duties and responsibilities as Chief Happiness Officer of my life.

I now declare you obliged to make yourself happy.

You can’t possibly expect to make someone else happy until you learn to make yourself happy, right?  So, this is your first priority.  One that you probably feel guilty to pursue or you set aside all together.  But, I say, it is time to make yourself happy.

This is your mission if you choose to accept it.

Your Role as Chief Happiness Officer

So, now that you’ve been officially sworn in as Chief Happiness Officer, do you want to know what responsibilities your role includes?

1. CHOOSE HAPPINESS

First of all, you have just accepted full responsibility for choosing to be happy.

That’s right, happiness is a choice.  You decide.  What choice will you make?

A lot of people seem to think you are either happy or you’re not.  Basically, they subscribe to the notion that happiness comes from our circumstances.  I mean things are either going your way or they are not, right?  WRONG!

As Chief Happiness Officer, you are in control of your happiness.  Regardless of what happens to you, you pick your attitude towards it.

Take a look at this quote:

Everything can be taken from a man or a woman but one thing: the last of human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.

~ Viktor Frankl, Holocaust survivor

If Mr. Frankl was able to choose his attitude in a Nazi concentration camp, then you can surely choose your attitude despite whatever circumstances you face.

Your first duty as CHO of your life is to choose happiness.  Stop believing other nonsense and myths about happiness and start deciding to be happy.

2. BE INTENTIONAL

You just became Chief Happiness Officer.  Your job is to deliberately plan and execute a strategy to produce happiness in your life.

Let me ask you this.  Do successful salespeople get big opportunities from lying on the couch watching television?  NO!  These are not the habits that create sales.

In the same way, you can’t expect to reap a harvest of happiness without intentionally engaging in specific activities designed to bring you happiness.

However, researchers have found that what we think will make us happy and what really makes us happy are often radically different.

We think we want things like:

  • A new house or a new car
  • More money
  • A relationship
  • A new job
  • Perhaps we think we’d be happier if we were more physically fit

This all seems logical on the surface, but scientists have found that our circumstances only account for about 10% of our total happiness.  10 measly percent.  Yet, think of how much time you waste trying to make your circumstances just right.

In reality, you can have a much greater impact on your overall happiness and sense of well-being by managing your attitude through intentional happiness activities like:

  • Actively practicing gratitude
  • Cultivating optimism
  • Savoring life’s joys
  • Committing to specific goals

These activities are specifically designed to manage your attitude and therefore are key strategies you can use to produce more happiness in your life.

This leads us to your third responsibility as Chief Happiness Officer.

3. BE PLAYFUL AND FUN

In the words of a great song from the 80s…Don’t Worry Be Happy!

STOP waiting for good things to happen to you!

PLAN your days.

What makes you feel good?  What makes you laugh?  Who do you enjoy being with?

At work, many of us have a calendar that we use to plan and organize our days.

Do you do something similar with your leisure time?  If not, why not???

Again, you are the Chief Happiness Officer of your life so, take control.  Fun doesn’t just spontaneously occur as often as you might imagine.

However, I can guarantee you that you will experience fun more often if you take the bull by the horns and plan enjoyable outings.

Stop shirking your responsibilities here and start being more playful and fun!

Whoever fathered the notion that all fun has to occur spontaneously was a nincompoop.  Did you know that you can actually buy yourself some happiness?  As CHO, you need to learn what works and put it into practice.

Congrats on Becoming Chief Happiness Officer

Thank you and congratulations for accepting the position of Chief Happiness Officer of your life.  I know you are going to be happy you did.

Now what are you waiting for?  Get to it!  I expect you to make yourself happy and to spread good cheer to everyone you come across.  Welcome aboard!
